Geelong Fresh Foods FAQs
What is a “superfood”?
The Macquarie Dictionary (2014) defines “superfood” as:
“A food with such a high concentration of nutrients, especially of vitamins and minerals, that only a small amount has to be consumed in order to gain the health benefits thought to be associated, as the release of antioxidants, etc.”
While it has been used as a bit of a marketing buzzword, Geelong Fresh Foods simply considers superfoods to be nutrient-dense foods which are mostly raw and organic. This means they have undergone minimal to no processing, other than to be harvested and packaged for consumption. Processing strips food of valuable nutrients and fibre, whereas superfoods retain a high level of their original nutritional value.
Should I follow a gluten-free diet?
If you have been medically diagnosed with coelic disease, eating a gluten-free diet is the only proven treatment. People suffering gluten sensitivity (non-coeliac) or suffering poor gut health will also benefit from eating gluten-free products. Many people who follow a gluten-free diet enjoy better digestive health which boosts their overall health and feeling of vitality. Geelong Fresh Foods stocks an extensive range of gluten-free products to be enjoyed by all, but of special benefit to those with a gluten intolerance.
Why should I eat organic produce?
Organic produce is grown without pesticides, genetic modification or other human and/or chemical interference. Organic produce is grown and harvested in its most natural state and therefore is a naturally healthier choice. Geelong Fresh Foods believes that fresh, organic food does not need to be expensive. They sell organic produce at the right price to make it more affordable and accessible to a wider range of people.
Where do you source your fresh fruit and vegetables from?
Each night at midnight Mark, who co-owns the food store with his brother and sister, drives to the Footscray market to collect fresh fruit and vegetables to stock the shop each day.
Are your continental groceries from local or imported sources?
A combination! Wherever possible the family-owned and run business supports other local businesses in the Geelong region by stocking their products and using their services. However, imported products complement the extensive range of continental groceries available in-store. Just a few of the local brands stocked include Geelong Confectionary, Manzillo Grove and Otway Blueberries.
